My research program is the only one in Canada dedicated to the study of the nitrogen-fixing actinobacterium Frankia sp. in contaminated ecosystems. This bioreactor system will allow me to effectively start my program and gain a significant international competitive edge. My students and I will use this instrument extensively and immediately for fundamental research to understand how anthropogenic stress impacts Frankia sp. and the actinorhizal symbiosis, and for applied research aimed at technology transfer for which collaborations are already in place (oil sands industry, Alberta, within 5 years). The culture of frankiae in this system will also allow us to complete the development of a high throughput technique (microwell plate culture), that will further accelerate my research. This bioreactor system will be central to the training of highly qualified personnel in microbiology and biotechnology.
