英文摘要
The Gel Documentation System is a piece of equipment that is central to our studies where electrophoresis gels as well as thin layer chromatograms routinely need to be viewed, documented, and analyzed. In Dr. Daayf's laboratory, the molecular and biochemical mechanisms governing the plant defense suppression that allows the currently predominant strain of P. infestans to overcome potato defenses are studied. This is being completed by studying the involvement of P. infestans glucans versus peptidic suppressors in defense gene downregulation. On the plant side, students will investigate whether other isoforms of pal and hmg accumulate at the expense of the suppressed gene in response to P. infestans suppressors. These studies involve the use of cDNA-AFLP, subtractive hybridization, as well as peptides extraction and separation. This research is important in order to understand how the most aggressive strains of P. infestans defeat potato defense reactions, and hopefully will lay the groundwork for more efficient knowledge-based disease control strategies. The requested equipment will be also used by Dr. Stasolla to study different molecular aspects of somatic embryogenesis, and Dr. Razem to study regulatory mechanisms that govern gene expression, in particular those involving abscissic acid.
