英文摘要
The requested Gel documentation System will serve the needs of researchers, their students and postdoctoral fellows in the Department of Cell and Systems Biology at the University of Toronto. Research in the department encompasses a range of fields in the life sciences including cell and developmental biology, genetics, and physiology. Gel documentation is a critical diagnostic tool in a molecular biology laboratory. The proposed gel documentation instrument will be used to record and analyze the results of many experimental approaches and procedures that involve the biological macromolecules DNA, RNA, and protein. It is required to visualize and evaluate the products of DNA and RNA isolation, DNA digests, PCR, in vitro transcription, protein expression, protein interaction studies, mutagenized genes, and recombinant gene construction. These laboratory procedures generate the tools that we use to understand the molecular networks, in which genes and their products operate, and how these networks determine the structure and function of cells and tissues. The researchers use various model organisms to explore the molecular processes that regulate development and function of cells and tissues. The many trainees working in these labs need to use a gel documentation system several times per day to record and analyze their experimental results. Thus, an efficient and high-quality gel documentation system is an essential component of a state-of-the-art research and training environment.
