An inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) is an instrument used to quantify elemental abundances in solutions. Its principal advantages are that it can simultaneously measure concentrations of a large suite of elements and that it is relatively robust and can accomodate a large range of solution concentrations without the need for dilution. The instrument complements existing instrumentation in Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia, and in particular would relieve the burden on our mass spectrometer instruments. Indeed, increasing demands from new faculty members and new geochemistry-related research in the department is now resulting in backlogs, delays and the inability to complete analyses in a timely and cost-effective manner.
