Shared computing facility for optimization modeling

We propose to establish a shared computing facility for mathematical optimization.  The facility will be shared by researchers in business, computing science, engineering, and geography.  The researchers focus on different areas of application, including control of chemical processes, bioinformatics, facility location, call centre operations, and on-demand computing.  What they have in common is the use of mathematical optimization techniques to find solutions that optimize some measure of performance and the need for high-performance optimization software.  State-of-the-art optimization software is expensive and requires powerful hardware.  Therefore, we propose purchasing a server with the necessary optimization software to be used jointly by the co-applicants and their graduate students and research associates.  The software will include linear, integer, and nonlinear programming solvers and software to facilitate integration of such solvers with other necessary computations.
