The requested glove-box will provide a suitable and reliable environment for the preparation of a novel class of promising magnetic materials. The materials under investigation belong to the group of rare-earth sulfychlorides. The rare-earth ions provide large magnetic moments, as required for future industrial applications, the anion arrangement (sulfide and halide anions) permit the manipulation of magnetic interactions in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions. The challenge for the preparation of such materials is to work in a chemically inert atmosphere, because of the reactivity of the starting materials and the expected hydrolysis of the products. The target rare-earth sulfychlorides can only be prepared in a dry and oxygen-free environment.
