This request is for funds to replace the defective microwave bridge on a Bruker EMS300E X-band Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectrometer (EPR). The spectrometer has been disabled due to failure of the electronic module associated with the microwave bridge. The bridge is the excitation source required to operate the EPR spectrometer. The instrument was funded by NSERC in 1993, and remains the only such spectrometer available at any of the five universities in Montreal, and the only instrument on the McGill campus that can service the needs of researchers from Chemistry, Physics, Medicine and Pulp and Paper at McGill as well. Dedicated use of the EPR is required by the four co-applicants, their students and PDFs, and is utilized by researchers from other Mcgill Departments, from other Quebec Universities and industry. In respect to the co-applicants, the instrument supports research in advanced materials for molecular electronics, studies in bioinorganic chemistry related to malaria, research into free radical sensors, and programs in optical materials for photonics.
