An automated benchtop flow cytometry system for multicolour cell analysis

This application is for a benchtop analytical flow cytometer that will be used by a group of eight researchers within the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. All of the applicants are funded by NSERC Discovery research grants and are engaged in research programs studying the cell and molecular biology of eukaryotic cells. Flow cytometry is a technique that is used for analyzing cells or particles suspended in a stream of fluid. Flow cytometry has become an essential tool for the cell biologist, allowing quantitative analysis of numerous cellular properties including cell viability, proliferation, cell surface and intracellular antigens, intracellular pH, calcium and membrane potential. Technological advances have reduced instrument costs and simplified their operation. The use of this technology by the applicants is hampered by limited access to this equipment on campus. There is an urgent need for a flow cytometer within the department that is both easy to operate and offers the flexibility to accommodate the demands of a multi-user research environment.
