Electrophysiology recording set up for respiratory neurobiology

The transition from water to air breathing was a pivotal step in animal evolution. To exploit the rich terrestrial habitat, animals had to deal with the important diffrecences between water and air as gas exchange mediums. Although we understand the anatomical and physiological differences related to breathing in water or on land, we know little about the changes in the central nervous system related to the emergence of air breathing. Since 1999, NSERC has supported my research program which aims to further advance our knowledge of respiratory neurobiology of animals. More specifically, we aim to understand the transformation that take place within the central nervous system during the metamorphosis from tadpole (water breather) to adult frog (air breather). The equipment we request is to improve our ability to perform this research and to train students with more specialised tools.
