High altitude is a very harsh environment in which mammals live. Since this environment has low oxygen levels animals should use this limited resource effectively.  We are requesting funds to purchase a field respirometry system to take the "lab to the animals" along different altitudes in the Peruvian Andes.  Several species of mice belonging to the same genus live at different altitudes in this region.  With the proposed equipment and this animal system we can test several hypothesis about energy use in animals adapted to high altitude.  We can determine what fuels they are using during exercise, how much energy they use to move a given distance and how efficiently they exercise.  All of these are potential adaptations to this harse environment.
