The applicant and co-applicants are involved in research in laser micorprocessing for various applications. They all have a shared interest in the proposed micropositioning work station. This apparatus will not only allow them to advance their individual knowledge, but also to work on joint research interest. The apparatus will be used for fundamental and applied research in laser ablative micro-processing, including 3-D structructuring, interconnection via drilling, microwelding for 3-D MEM assembly and direct writing of devices for space applications. The proposed apparatus is essential to complete their research and HQP training. The delay of acquiring the requested equipment may cause hinder the progress of graduate students who are currently under the applicant's supervision.
