The mechanisms of soot formation have been investigated extensively over many years and only very broad features of the formation processes in atmospheric flames have been established. The hope of reducing or eliminating soot particulate emission from combustion sources clearly requires a better understanding of its formation and oxidation during the combustion process. Although, a significant portion of combustion devices that operate at high pressures use liquid fuels, there is no reported measurements on sooting behaviour of liquid fuels in laminar diffusion flames at pressures higher than atmospheric. High pressure soot studies reported in literature are limited to measurements on gaseous fuels (methane, ethylene, ethane, and propane) flames. Gaseous fuels mimic the behaviour of the liquid fuels to a very limited extent, and cannot capture the influences of, for example, branching and cyclic structures on sooting propensities due to the simple chemical structure of gaseous fuels. It is also possible that the pressure dependence of soot formation liquid hydrocarbon fuel flames could be sensitive to the chemical structure of the liquid fuel. Requested burner system would make it possible to make high-fidelity measurements under controlled conditions to investigate the influence of pressure and fuel chemical structure on soot formation propensity of liquid hydrocarbon fuels.
