Fish Passage and Habitat Structures in Rivers: In the past several years, we have made many fundamental contributions to the hydraulics of Pool and Weir, Denil, Vertical slot and Culvert fishways. As a result, these fishways can now be designed for simple situations. We would like to extend this investigation, to measure the turbulence structures in all the four types of fishways, to enhance fish passage. Turbulent Jets & Related Investigations: In the past few years, we have made several contributions to the applications of turbulent jets in Hydraulic Engineering. It appears that it is important to measure the turbulent structure in the scour holes produced by these jets. For the jets with finite depth of submergence, it is necessary to measure the turbulent structure, to strengthen our understanding of this class of flows. We plan to make these measurements with our ADV. We are also extending our study of turbulent jets to turbulent slurry jets to help with the management of the Slurry Ponds at the Oilsands Facilities in Northern Alberta. Environmental Hydraulics: In the past ten years, we have started investigations into many aspects of municipal hydraulics. These studies have included the hydraulics of plunging flow dropshafts, which have been used in the City of Edmonton. Our studies have indicated that the energy loss in these dropshafts could be significant. We would like to extend our studies to include a wider range of height to diameter ratio of these shafts and understand the mechanism of this significant energy dissipation and make some measurements of the air demand in these dropshafts.
