英文摘要
This research program in water resources engineering provides a number of opportunities to investigate questions in the emerging field of eco-hydraulics. This proposal has three main projects: 1) Fish Passage and Habitat Structures in Rivers; 2) Turbulent Jets in Hydraulic Engineering; and 3) Environmental Hydraulics. Fish passage and habitat structures in rivers: Fish passage past either man-made or natural obstructions in rivers is important for the survival of fish in our rivers. My research group has made significant contributions to the design of various fishways (e.g. pool and weir, Denil, vertical slot and culvert fishways) so that these can be designed for most situations. We have made a preliminary contribution to one type of nature-like Boulder ramp fishway, and we want to develop a general design of and also study the Riffle-Pool type during the next five years. Turbulent jets are very important in the design of hydraulic structures. We studied the hydraulics of submerged jump stilling basins and want to develop a standard basin for submerged flows below hydraulic structures. We have developed a general analysis of circular hydraulic jumps and plan to develop a general design for practical use. We are also studying slurry jets to help in the reclamation of oil sands ponds in Northern Alberta and to make a general contribution to two-phase turbulent jets. This project has the potential for the remediation of granular nuclear wastes. Environmental hydraulics: We have studied and helped design plungeflow dropshafts in the City of Edmonton's drainage system. We plan to improve these designs to reduce odour problems in the drainage systems. These studies will be done in collaboration with the City of Edmonton, which may increase its practical application in other municipalities.
