Fish passage and Habitat structures in Rivers: Fish passage past either man-made or natural obstructions in rivers is important for the survival of fish in our rivers. We have made significant contributions to the design of Pool & Weir, Denil and Vertical slot fishways so that these can be designed for most situations. We plan to develop similar designs for the so-called nature-like fishways. We also plan to study and develop suitable habitat for fish in rivers. Turbulent Jets are very important in the design of hydraulic structures, mixing in nature and industries. We plan to study and develop submerged jump stilling basins for use with hydraulic structures and basins for use in dryponds, which are important for municipal drainage systems. We are also studying slurry jets with the idea of helping in the reclamation of Oilsands ponds in Northern Alberta. Environmental Hydraulics: We have studied and helped design dropshafts in the Edmonton Municipal Drainage system. We plan to help in improving these designs to reduce odour problems in the Drainage systems. These studies have the collaboration of the City of Edmonton, which makes our research practical.
