A workshop in Havana is proposed for Canadian scientists to meet with Cuban scientists to discuss the results of a survey of indigenous white-rot fungi (Basidiomycetes) for laccase and manganese peroxidase activities. It is anticipated that some of these fungi will have novel enzymes with high activities and redox potentials sufficient for biotech applications in, for example, agriculture, the pulp and paper industry and bioremediation. Six Canadians from the Universities of Guelph and Montreal and from the Alberta Research Council will fly to Havana for meetings with their Cuban colleagues. A pre-workshop meeting among the Canadians will be held to share information on expertise, potential for contribution(s), and about the infrastructure and research potential at each home institution. Following this, Canadian and Cuban participants will meet over three days. The focus of the workshop will be to discuss the research of Dr. Miguel Ramos-Leal of the Microbiology Department at the University of Havana, who will present data on Cuban white-rot fungi and associated enzymes, and the entire group will discuss prospects and strategies for research and collaboration. The group will visit the Cuban laboratories, and consider issues including short- and long- term needs to facilitate a collaborative research program, appropriate timing of potential experimental approaches leading to technological innovations, and appropriate team-member responsibilities. Before the workshop concludes, a draft summary of the meeting and its findings will be circulated and discussed, and additional information will be obtained if necessary. Following the meeting with the Cubans, the Canadians will meet for one more day to finalize decisions on the potential for research and collaboration back in Canada, including an analysis of commercial potential, during which specific plans for investigation, educational exchanges and funding proposals will be developed.
