An inert atmosphere glove box and solvent purification system is requested to enable students in my laboratory to safely, routinely and reproducibly carry out water and oxygen sensitive chemical syntheses which will add to my general research capability.At present, my research program is divided into two areas each supporting the common goal of a plastic solar cell.  The first area (50%) is focused toward the design, synthesis and engineering of phthalocyanine (Pc) crystals for light capture and electrical charge generation.  The second (50%) is focused towards electrically transportive polymers to move the generated charge to the electrodes thereby completing the solar cell circuit.  In the short term both the inert atmosphere glove box and the solvent purification system will directly support my work on Pc crystals and more specifically my pursuit of metal free subphthalocyanine (H2-subPc), an elusive compound not currently reported in the literature.  Its derivatives have potential applications as a light capturing crystal for plastic solar cells.  The solvent purification system will also support the other half of my research program on electrically transportive polymers.  With proper maintenance the glove box and solvent purification system will have a lifetime longer than my tenure at the University of Toronto and in the long term this equipment will ensure my lab has the capability to carry out oxygen and moisture sensitive syntheses.
