At the University of Toronto we have significant efforts on the molecular design of novel organic semi-conducting materials with a primary focus on their application in organic solar cells (OSCs). OSCs are electronic devices that directly convert sunlight into electric charge. whereby organic materials are the ‘active materials’, defined as the materials responsible for the direct conversion of light to electric charge. OSCs recently achieved a benchmark efficiency of 8.4%, half of that of a silicon based solar cell but at a projected 1/10 of the cost. Organic active materials are versatile and can be varied and their functions engineered through the versatility of organic chemical reactions. Therefore OSCs have the potential to be the next generation of solar cell technologies.
