英文摘要
Funding is sought for a three axis Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) mill. It will be converted from a vertical CNC mill to metal forming machine, that can do single point incremental forming of sheet metal. HQP research work includes: single point incremental forming on a macro scale; single point incremental forming on a microforming scale; making macro and micro sheet metal prototypes; conducting friction studies in sheet metal forming; creating textured surfaces for friction studies; combining single point incremental forming and reverse engineering; friction welding. The sheet metal forming process in this case is Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF). This process is sometimes known as dieless forming or Asymmetric Incremental Sheet Forming. The PI for this application was among the first researchers to investigate SPIF. Starting in 2003, he was the ad hoc chair of an international group studying SPIF. The process is versatile and allows rapid prototypes to be made from sheet metal without dies, in very short times. The sheet metal forming machine will be instrumented with force and torque sensors, remote position sensors, temperature sensors and visual measurement equipment. Many of the sensors will be unique and developed in house. At least thirty years of experience in sensor design is available. The experience gained in previous single point incremental forming will be applied directly to microforming and medical applications. Much of this will be development of HQP experience.?the fabrication of a Titanium sheet metal protective insert for patients that have had bone removed from their cranium,?the fabrication of custom splints for leg supports?creation of micro formed textured sheet metal surfaces for friction studies.
