英文摘要
The basic question posed by a customer, "how much CO2 has been emitted in making a product?' is not available. It can and should be available for any product. The objective of the work proposed is to develop simple, basic models that can be used by a manufacturer to determine the Greenhouse Gases emitted for a specific product, or product part, using a local electrical power grid. This falls within the designated area of Sustainable Energy systems (production distribution)/ low emission industrial systems. 87% of the funding will be used to support graduate students, who will learn skills that will aid them in industry and future carbon trading markets. Energy consumption is the primary reason for Greenhouse Gas emissions and a large part of the emissions occur in the manufacturing sector. The energy needed to operate a product is sometimes available, for instance, white goods (dryers, stoves) generally use this as an advertising technique. However, the amount ofGreenhouse Gas emitted in manufacturing a product is not advertised. A manufacturer will be able to apply the easy-to-use techniques developed to calculate the Greenhouse Gases (GHG's) used in manufacturing a product. This can then be shown on a GHG label for that product. The label can be used by a customer in deciding to purchase a product. GHG labels can be used to both market and to advertise a product. The work proposed will make a direct connection between the energy used to make a product with power from a local power grid and the CO2 emitted in making the product.
