Innovative design of complex products and creation of ingenious manufacturing methods, such as the development of next generation hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrain system and the automated generation of optimal toolpaths in 5-axis CNC machining of dies and moulds with curved surfaces, heavily rely on advanced model based design (MBD), simulation and optimization. This research addresses the fundamental design issues in HEV powertrain developments and the bottleneck planning problem in generating efficient 5-Axis CNC toolpaths. The proposed work will: (a) extend our new efficient and robust metamodel-based global optimization (MB-OP) methods into multi-objective optimization (MOO) and test the new algorithms using benchmark MOO problems and HEV powertrain design case studies; (b) establish a new hybrid powertrain design paradigm by integrating MBD and metamodel-based multi-objective global optimization through improved hybrid powertrain component and architecture models; (c) validate the new hybrid powertrain models and optimization results using hardware-in-loop simulation and vehicle tests; and (d) extend our generic, highly efficient and high-quality part producing 5-axis CNC machining method to globally optimal 5-axis CNC tool path/cutter orientation solutions. The research will introduce a new computational design methodology; gain better understanding on the multi-regime hybrid powertrain architectures and control strategies; build and maintain a world-class green vehicle technology research program, team, and facilities; and continuously attract and train highly qualified personnel (HQP). The proposed work will add momentum to our thriving research on green vehicle, green ship and EcoCAR developments, and form the foundation for broader and further research and industrial applications. The research will benefit Canada and the integrated North American automotive and manufacturing industry.
