In order to provide new regional-scale information on the internal structure of the eastern Canadian Shield, it is vital to deploy new broadband seismograph stations across Quebec. The resolution of crust and upper mantle seismic structure in the region has been greatly impeded by a lack of seismograph station coverage, and broadband sensors are essential in obtaining the full range of seismic data necessary to achieve this goal. The primary target for seismic studies in the 2007-2009 time period is the Abitibi Greenstone Belt and the neighbouring western Grenville Province, which straddle the Ontario-Quebec border. Recent studies across northern Ontario, along with previous 2-D studies, suggest that the continental crust and mantle beneath this region is extremely complex. In order to resolve 3-D structure, the deployment of ten new broadband seismograph stations in western Quebec is required, to add to the existing station coverage in eastern Ontario. The stations will use internet connections to provide real-time seismic data for the project.
