In the context of optimizing the grinding media charge characteristics to improve ball milling performances, COREM has been developing over the last years an off-line simulator mainly based on the ITASCA software DEM simulation package. The simulator, referred to as CORSim in the frame of this project, development includes three main components: grinding media wear, energy and event distributions within the ball mill, and ore breakage. Over this development, a number of questions have been raised that require further research and validation.Specifically, the issues are:l. What is the coherence between the energy distributions generated by ITASCA and the energy levels involved in single particle ore breakage from DEM simulation?2. Can one validate the energies and forces acting on a ball inside a ball mill?3. Can a DEM ore breakage model be developed and validated to simulate breakage in the 1 cm to 0.1 mm range?4. What is the relationship between energy distributions and ore liberation?These issues will be addressed by meeting the following two objectives the results of which will constitute the deliverables of the project:1. Validate energy distributions acting on a grinding ball in a lab and pilot plant mills and, extrapolate theresults to industrial mills2. Develop and validate a simplified DEM ore breakage model applied to ball milling and extrapolate theresults to ore liberation
