Northern development especially related to the proposed Mackenzie Valley Natural Gas Pipeline and understanding the potential impact of Climate Change in the Arctic requires improved knowledge of the existence and movement of unfrozen water in freezing soils and permafrost subjected to load.The research to be carried out will introduce new investigative methods and tools, notably miniaturized equipment that permits synchronization of the digital imaging and measurements at the micro-scale, to the investigation of unfrozen water migration in freezing soils.The application is to construct a new soil freezing cell that allows for the real time synchronization of digital images taken during a freezing experiment with the measured pore pressures within both a freezing and frozen soil. Internal temperatures will also be recorded to relate the pressure and temperature to the internal unfrozen water content at different locations in the freezing soil.Such innovation is in keeping with the UofA Geotechnical Centre's long tradition of excellence in frozen and freezing soils research and one that has contributed toward the Centre's recognised reputation in permafrost engineering.
