Computer software for calculations in particle physics

Physicists have learned that all matter and energy can be assembled from a small number of different types of fundamental particles.  The theory which describes these particles has been so successful that it has been dubbed the ``Standard Model''.  There is a catch, though: nobody can exactly solve the equations which predict what the particles will do in an experiment.  Instead, approximations have to be made, and the more accurate the approximation, the more difficult it is to calculate the answer.  My research uses computers in uncommon ways in order to improve the accuracy of the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model.  These predictions can then be compared with experimental data in order to gain new insights about the inner workings of the world at its smallest scales.
