Precision measurement methods are required in industry to measure the dimensions and shapes of manufactured parts. Laser scanning has emerged as the best method for collecting a large number of measurements from complex, curved surfaces like car body panels. In current practice, laser scanners are commonly manually programmed or operated. As a result, the inspection plan is inefficient and the part may not be completely scanned. This project will develop tools and techniques to automate and optimize the programming of laser scanners. The sub-problems to be solved include the following: - Finding a set of scan head positions, orientations and paths so that the entire part can be scanned efficiently. - Checking for and avoiding collisions between the scanning head and the workpart during the scanning process. - Optimizing the scanning process to minimize the total scanning time and maximize the scanning accuracy. This project will lead to significant improvements in the productivity and effectiveness of laser scanning in industry.
