The applicant and her research group will investigate novel approaches and techniques for design of fault tolerant (wavelength division multiplexing) WDM optical networks as well as efficient traffic routing schemes in such networks. We will develop optimal network design techniques for the recently proposed scheduled traffic model, and introduce new design strategies that do not use the traditional protection based schemes, but can still guarantee survivability. We will also use the concept of waveband switching to design cost-effective, robust networks and investigate the problem of traffic grooming in WDM mesh networks.
