Transport Canada figures show that in 2009, there were 2,209 people killed and 172,883 people were injured in road crashes in Canada. The economic and social consequences of road crashes are profound -- estimated to be $25 billion a year. Intelligent transport systems (ITS) can help to prevent or reduce such fatalities as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications will allow a driver to receive updated traffic information and weather conditions. In a V2V and V2I network, it is important to develop appropriate vehicular communication architectures and protocols to improve the efficiency, latency and reliability of the system that also provide mechanism for secure communication.
