Applied photophysics stopped-flow upgrade

The Applied Photophysics SX.18MV stopped-flow fluorescence/absorption spectrometer was originally purchased in 1995 and it was upgraded in 2003 with a new sample handling unit (flow cell and drive rams) and stopping value/syringe assembly.  This spectrometer has been a workhorse and has contributed significantly to the research programs of a number of investigators in several departments at the University of Guelph. However, the operating system (OS) has always been a thorny issue with North American users since the instrument OS is the United Kingdom-based Acorn platform. This proposal is a request for funds to upgrade the instrument from its Acorn OS with a new computer interface, instrument control software, and operating system (Windows XP).  The instrument hardware and mechanics are still in wonderful shape, but the present OS is antiquated and makes data acquisition slow and tedious.  Furthermore, file sharing and data analysis require extra conversion steps, especially when using external fitting and data plotting/graphing programs.  This last upgrade will convert our Applied Photophysics instrument to the current standard of the new 2007 SX-20MV spectrometers and should extend the practical lifetime of this instrument to several more years.
