The CERN Large Hadron Collider will be a particle accelerator which will collide protons with protons to achieve a collision energy of 14 TeV.  This energy corresponds to 14,000 times the energy associated with the mass of the proton.  It is nearly an order of magnitude greater than what can be achieved at any present accelerator.  At this enormous energy it is expected that certain fundamental ideas about the origin of mass will be tested.The ATLAS detector is a complex of detector elements which will allow physicists to study the products of the proton-proton collisions.  The Canadian group proposes to construct two detector elements known as calorimeters and to develop electronics for recording the information from these detectors.
