This request is for funds to build two different systems to monitor local temperature rises on the surfaces of superconducting RF cavities under test. Superconducting RF cavities are the technology of choice for the accelerating element in modern particle accelerators. They generate high frequency high voltage electric fields which accelerate electrically charged particles. The higher the voltage achieved, the higher the energy, or more efficient, the accelerator is. While developing these cavities, they are tested to reveal surface defects which may limit the achievable voltage. These surface defects may result in local temperature rises of a fraction of a degree. Diagnostics systems which measure these temperature rises during cavity testing are the subject of this request.
