This proposal is for the purchase of an electromagnetic flowmeter that will be used in conjunction with a particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) system and Doppler ultrasound (DUS) research system for various flow-related research studies. The PIV and DUS systems can be used to accurately and precisely map flow patterns and flow velocities with high spatial and temporal resolution for use in medical physics and soft condensed matter physics. The primary use of the flowmeter will be for measurements in physical models mimicking vascular flow, such as through arteries with plaque build-up, in order to gain a better understanding of hemodynamics (blood flow) changes due to disease progression. The flowmeter will be used to provide accurate in-line measurement and verification of the bulk flow rates and flow volume. These detailed flow studies require a flowmeter that does not disturb the flow being measured and is sensitive to pulsatile flow, including low volumetric flow rates and rapid fluctuations.
