Developing tools and technologies for the better management of urban stormwater

Urban stormwater management refers to the collection, transport, treatment, and ultimate disposal of rain water fallen over (or snowmelt water generated from) urban areas.  Urban stormwater management problems are either recently recognized (e.g., the non-point source pollution nature of urban runoff, the functioning of existing drainage systems and the proper design of new systems under a changing climate) or newly occurred (e.g., the removal, treatment, and disposal of contaminated sediments accumulating in stormwater quality control detention facilities).  Effective and efficient solution of these problems requires innovative tools and technologies.  The proposed research program is aimed at the development of innovative stormwater modeling tools using the analytical probabilistic approach and plasma-based technologies for the treatment of contaminated stormwater sediments.  The impact of climate change on urban drainage and stormwater management will be thoroughly investigated as well.  The analytical probabilistic approach will ensure rigorous and robust planning and design of stormwater management facilities.  Plasma-based technologies ensure a total destruction of contaminants at relatively low cost and recover valuable materials for reuse.  Tools and technologies developed through the proposed research will assist greatly in the better management of urban stormwater.
