Low impact development practices (LIDs) are urban rainwater control measures which seek to maintain the natural hydrologic functions of an area. The natural hydrologic functions of an area include on-site retention and infiltration of rainwater as well as retardation of the flows of runoff. Rainwater harvesting, bio-retention systems, grass swales, and infiltration trenches are examples of LIDs.
