We are seeking to obtain a portable high resolution sub-bottom profiler. This small lightweight unit can be relatively easily transported via backback to remote lakes and ponds in the Arctic and alpine regions. The equipment is towed behind a boat (canoe or inflatable) and by sending out an acoustic signal, generates an image of the nature and thickness of sediments. This will allow for investigators to optimize the best location for retrieval of sediment cores from which paleoenvironmental reconstructions will be made. Such paleolimnological studies have documented climate change, airborne contaminant and deposition amongst other environmental changes that are often magnified at higher latitudes and elevations.
