Analyses of extreme weather systems affecting eastern Canada

The proposed research focuses on improving our understanding of large range of cyclogeneses, both tropical and extratropical, which impact eastern Canada.  Additional research is proposed to study both the climatology and predictability of precipitation in Atlantic Canada.  The research topics are linked in that both tropical and extratropical cyclogeneses are responsible for a large share of extreme precipitation events in eastern Canada.  The ultimate goal of this research is to improve predictions of extreme cyclogenesis and precipitation in eastern Canada.  The techniques developed during the course of this proposed research program may be applied to all regions of Canada, so that improved predictions of extreme weather may be enhanced throughout Canada.
