This work involves a fundamental study of the structure and reactivity of a class of organic compounds called "oxazolines". The oxazoline is a small ring containing carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. We examine how this ring system attachs itself to metals and metal ions such as platinum. The work is intended to increase our ability to control structure at the molecule level and hopefully to later use this information to build systems for industrial catalysis or other applications in the Canadian industrial sector. In addition, many students are trained in the fundamental aspects of chemistry, a skill that is of great benefit to Canadian industry such as our many pharmaceutical companies.
