Genetic diversity in angus cattle

This study will compare genetic diversity in Angus cattle using alleles that affect traits of economic importance and microsatellite markers, which are not under selection. Three populations of Angus cattle will be compared: Canadian Angus cows, Canadian Angus bulls, and elite ET calves from 10 countries including Canada. The six genes chosen for study are based on recently discovered DNA tests that are being implemented in commercial settings. The 20 microsatellite markers are a set selected specifically to monitor genetic diversity among breeds and over time by the Canadian Animal Genetic Resources Program. This information should be useful to the Canadian Angus Association to assess the level of diversity and of favorable alleles in their cattle relative to other major countries involved in Angus cattle breeding.
