The objective of the proposed research is to investigate the chemistry of halogen atom containing molecules (specifically: ClNO2, Cl2, Br2, and BrCl) that exist in the atmosphere. Several research groups have recently shown that reactive halogens accelerate photochemical ozone production and negatively impact air quality in coastal regions; however, many processes that regulate the abundance of reactive halogens are only marginally understood. More research is urgently needed to achieve a better understanding of formation and loss pathways of reactive halogens in the troposphere (the lowest layer of the atmosphere), especially in urban environments.
