As mobile phone cameras improve, they will soon become the most common type of camera used by consumers to take photographs. Users will typically want to perform any desired image editing directly on the mobile phone device and send their photographs to their friends or on-line albums. The objective of our research is to create a software application for mobile phones that can perform a particularly useful operation that is not currently available on such devices, which is to automatically stitch multiple images into a single larger image. Stitching refers to the identification of overlapping portions among a set of images and the reconstruction of a single larger image that combines the previous images with no visible seams. This gives cameras a wide-angle or 360-degree imaging capability, and such image stitching tools are popular as desktop applications. However, a number of problems must be addressed before they can be made available for mobile devices. We propose to address issues of efficiency, intuitive interface design, and planar stitching models to allow our popular desktop Autostitch software to be used on current mobile phone platforms. We plan to target the Apple iPhone as our first mobile device.
