In this proposal we are requesting funds to replace the argon ion laser tube and fibre optic probe assembly in the capillary electrophoresis (CE) system that was purchased in 2001 through joint NSERC and FQRNT (formerly FCAR Québec) equipment grants. The acquired CE system came equipped with three interchangeable detectors: UV absorbance, diode array (DAD) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF). The system has been used on a continual basis since 2001, alternating between the three detectors depending on the project at a given moment. A few months ago, the argon ion laser used for excitation in conjunction with the LIF detector reached the end of its life. The fibre optic probe assembly used to focus laser emission on the capillary was also found to need urgent replacement due to wear and tear from the several years of use.
