Responding and adapting to global change in Canadian coastal ecosystems

We propose to organize a workshop of scientists and managers from universities and the federal and provincial governments who share a strong concern for the present and future quality of coastal ecosystems and are looking for new tools and approaches to manage these ecosystems. To develop the knowledge required takes a multi-disciplinary effort by hydrologists, biogeochemists, ecologists, oceanographers, and modelers. In addition, projecting our understanding of the present into the future requires participation of climate and ocean modelers. The workshop will bring together representatives of the scientific community and the user community in order to develop - together - the framework for a strategic network that will include the breath of scientific expertises required to tackle this important problem and provide guidance and tools to help manage our coastal waters. This framework will be used to develop a letter of intention and ultimately a full proposal for an NSERC Strategic Network to develop the knowledge needed to respond and adapt to the effects of global change in Canadian coastal ecosystems.
