High speed refrigerated centrifugation is an essential step in the purification of proteins and other high molecular weight species that are thermally unstable. Modern equipment allows the safe and rapid handling of large quantities of a variety of material samples as a central part of modern preparative biochemical research. Work supported by NSERC in our laboratories on proteins involves expression and isolation of native and mutant enzymes, requiring high speed refrigerated centrifugation as a critical. Students are instructed in the safe and efficient use of such equipment as a central part of their practical training.
