AvidBiologics is interested in developing products that direct anti-cancer drugs specifically to target cancer cells in tumors. In doing so, they have acquired a collection of antibody proteins that have been shown to bind to malignant tumors. The proposed research at the University of Toronto will develop ways to attach drugs chemically to those antibodies, so that the drug can be guided specifically to the desired site of action. The project involves designing the chemicals to be used as connecting reagents, producing the desired chemicals, and then developing a process for attaching anti-cancer drugs. The resulting drug-linked reagents will then be tested for their ability to react specifically with the cell-targeting antibodies and the successfully produced materials will be evaluated by AvidBiologics. This is an introductory study to determine the feasibility of the approach and to establish a collaborative effort should the results obtained justify further work.
