The Data Mining and Bioinformatics group at SFU is one of the five primary research groups at the School of Computing Science and one of the most active. This proposal mainly aims to provide computer infrastructure necessary to tackle the computational challenges that arise in the joint and independent projects of of the respective labs of three leading faculty in the group, namely Cenk Sahinalp, Martin Ester and Ke Wang. Major research projects to be supported by the new infrastructure include the multi-national "1000 genomes project", which aims to sequence 1000 individual human genomes, the Bioinformatics for Combating Infectious Diseases at SFU and a project on privacy-preserving methods for data publishing and data mining.
