We do not know how cells in a developing embryo in any organism find their way amongst all other cells to their final destination. Possible pathways for a cell to travel during early development are generally in flux as most of the cells are dividing, changing shape and also migrating. A key question is "What are the landmarks a migrating cell uses as cues in such a dynamic setting?" The stereotypical cell division and migration behaviour during development in the nematode C. elegans provides a relatively controlled environment in which to identify cues for cell migration.
