Biomass and waste have received significant attention as renewable sources of neutral carbon. Technologies to process these "new" feedstocks are still based on traditional petrochemical refinery processes and need to adapt to the new and variable nature of the materials being processed. One of the cleaner, practical, and efficient of these technologies is gasification. Gasification, in the case of biomass and waste, involves converting solid hydrocarbons into non-condensable gases such as CO and H2 for combustion (electricity generation) and chemical/fuel synthesis. Biomass contains significantly higher moisture and oxygenated organic content than crude oil. This promotes undesirable sticky tar formation at lower-temperature zones within the gasifier. Further, biomass contains higher inorganic, ash, and silica than crude oil. This leads to excessive formation of undesired particulates in biomass gasification product gases. We are proposing several innovative approaches to deal with tar and particulates in biomass gasification processes.
