La FDA a récemment émis des directives afin d'encourager le développement de nouveaux outils (« process analytical technology » ou PAT) pour effectuer des mesures en ligne de paramètres critiques durant la réalisation du produit. Les précèdes impliquant des systèmes multiphasiques sont abondamment utilises pour la production de produits pharmaceutiques. Les concentrations des composes liquides et gazeux et la fraction de solides - ratio du volume contenant des particules solides sur le volume total - constituent deux paramètres critiques. Us sont essentiels pour optimisation, le dépannage et le contrôle de précèdes dans les milieux industriels et les laboratoires. Us sont également primordiales au développement de modèles hydrodynamiques (écoulement des phases) et cinétiques (vitesse de la réaction) pour la conception de précèdes.
