Managing design and manufacturing complexity

The present proposal builds on an established research program in the areas of design and manufacturing. It will train graduate students and will generate new designs and productivity enhancing knowledge and solutions to be used by manufacturing industries. The proposed research will help manage the turbulent demand on manufacturing by generating a Manufacturing Planning and Control System that would be easily adaptable to new manufacturing inventory and capacity based policies. A number of control theories and models will be developed to achieve this goal. Moreover a considerable effort will be devoted to optimize the products design so that they can be assembled and disassembled effectively and efficiently. This research will contribute to the proper recycling of used products (and components of the manufacturing system) and also during their maintenance and repair throughout their life. This research is currently of interest to industry as well as the academic community in view of the importance of competitiveness and positive environmental effects.
