The proposed research investigates how people make decisions under conditions of uncertainty that require them to draw on their own relevant past experience. Everyday examples include a commuter using past experience to decide which of several alternative routes home is least likely to result in a traffic jam, a physician identifying diagnostic symptoms associated with a novel disease based on patients seen to date, and a venture capitalist relying on past experience in evaluating characteristics of a business plan that are useful in predicting its future commercial value.
